Sacred Grounds Organic Coffee Roasters started in 1997 with a simple mission to provide freshly roasted coffees from sustainable sources.  We believe in equitable trade, social justice and environmental responsibility.

Our Business

Downtown Arcata in 1997 lacked a late night coffee house.  Steven and Fred Hebert, the father and son team who founded Sacred Grounds decided to start a coffee house that roasted fresh beans on site.

 In November 1997 the coffee house opened.  Beth Dominick was hired as the dishwasher, a job she took after seasonal work at Redwood National Park ended.  She was quickly immersed in coffee culture.  Before long she was on the bar as lead barista, then coffee house manager.  

Roasting was what set Sacred Grounds apart from other coffee houses in Arcata.  Our 7th and F Street location served as the roastery until 2001 when we outgrew the space and moved the roasting works to the alder grove industrial park on Arcata's northeast side.

 Beth Dominick bought the company in 2008 from the Heberts.  Along with her husband Tim, brother Chris and daughter Hazel, Sacred Grounds is a family business, just as it always has been.

Who We Are

Beth Dominick

 President of Sacred Grounds Organic Coffee Roasters.  She has held every position in the company and currently oversees green coffee purchasing and third party certifications for Sacred Grounds.

 Beth is a licensed Q grader and STAR cupper and has led multiple trips to coffee producing countries as a liason for the Roasters Guild.  She is incoming chair of the Roasters Guild and serves on several Specialty Coffee Association  comittees. 

 She is also an IOIA trained organic inspector, specializing in dairy and livestock certifications.

Tim Dominick

Director of roasting works.  Since 2001 Tim has been roasting and evaluating coffee for Sacred Grounds.  He handles green coffee logistics, roast scheduling and quality control.

 Prior to joining Sacred Grounds Tim trained under Mark Lechner as a wine taster/buyer for Wine Works, one of the Midwest's largest wine retailers.  

Tim currently serves on two Specialty Coffee Association of America's subcommittees and volunteers during SCAA events as a trainer and facilitator.
